What happens if a key person can’t work?

Many businesses rely heavily on one or two key individuals, often the owner or a director, without fully considering the impact if they were unable to work.

We regularly see businesses where:

  • Income would drop immediately if a key person was absent
  • There is no plan to cover ongoing costs or debt
  • Personal income and family finances are closely tied to the business

A recent example we’ve seen:

We worked with an owner-managed business where the director was responsible for the majority of sales, client relationships and day-to-day decision-making.

When they were unexpectedly unable to work for several months due to illness, income dropped almost immediately.

Although the business itself was profitable, there was no protection in place to replace lost income or cover ongoing commitments.

The business had to rely on cash reserves to keep running, while personal finances also came under pressure at the same time.

What was intended as a temporary situation quickly became a source of stress and uncertainty.

A short review beforehand would have highlighted how exposed both the business and the director were, and allowed straightforward protection to be put in place, safeguarding cashflow, personal income and peace of mind.

Protection is not about expecting the worst. It is about making sure the business, and the people behind it, can cope if the unexpected happens.

As businesses grow, risks change. What was appropriate two or three years ago may no longer be enough today.

A short review can help identify whether your protection still matches your current business and personal position.

We are offering a complimentary 30-minute review to help you understand any gaps and whether action is needed.
